Hawaii Forest and Trail runs four different ways to see the volcano side of the Big Island, and they are not interchangeable.

Two of them go into Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; one built around walking, one built around a cacao farm and a waterfall. A third skips the park entirely and uses private access on Hualalai above Kona. The fourth flies you one way by helicopter.

All four include a guide who reads the conditions that day, transportation, lunch and rain gear. Pick by how much walking you want and how much of the day you are willing to give up.

Which One

Staying in Kona and short on time? Hidden Craters. Five hours, and you still see craters and a lava tube.

Want to walk the park? Volcano Direct. Three miles, ten hours, the real thing.

Travelling with people who do not hike? Volcano, Chocolate and Waterfalls.

One free day and a budget for it? Air and Land, which is the only way to cover both ends of the island properly.

Pickup is offered on the Waikoloa, Kona and Hilo sides depending on the tour. Visible flowing lava depends entirely on what Kilauea is doing and no operator can promise it. Online booking is still being set up; send an inquiry and we will confirm rates and reserve for you.

Which of the four should I pick?

    How much walking is involved?

From short walks on the chocolate tour to three miles of moderate-to-strenuous hiking on Volcano Direct. Tell us your group and we will steer you.

    Where does pickup happen?

Waikoloa and Hilo for the park tours, Kona for Hidden Craters, Waikoloa for Air and Land. We confirm the point closest to your hotel.

    What is included?

Transportation, a naturalist interpretive guide, lunch, rain gear and park entry where it applies.

    How large are the groups?

Twelve guests on the park tours, ten on Hidden Craters, six on Air and Land.
