Experience Nutridge is a small backyard-style luau on Tantalus, held on the grounds of Hawaii’s first macadamia nut plantation.

It is deliberately not a big-production show. Groups are kept small enough that you can talk to the staff, and the four hours are spent doing things; cultural workshops, Hawaiian games, protocols and traditions; rather than sitting and watching. Dinner is served on the lawn with downtown Honolulu and the Waianae range spread out below.

The estate sits inside Pu’u Ualaka’a State Park, about twenty minutes up the hill from Waikiki. You can drive yourself or book with round-trip transportation.

What you eat

Dinner is a mix of Hawaiian and local food: nalo greens with pineapple and liliko’i dressing, steamed rice, kalua pua’a (imu-cooked shredded pork), pulehu chicken, pua’a lau lau, baked fish in garlic lemon butter, purple sweet potato and King’s Hawaiian sweet bread. Dessert is liliko’i bars and haupia, with fresh pineapple.

Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and other dietary needs can usually be accommodated with 48 hours’ notice; note them when booking.

The estate

“Pu’u Ualaka’a” means “rolling sweet potato hill”. In 1921 Ernest Shelton Van Tassel leased 22 acres here and planted Australian macadamia trees, making this Hawaii’s first macadamia nut plantation. Over the years the estate hosted Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley spent time here while filming Blue Hawaii.

The luau is inside Pu’u Ualaka’a State Park on Tantalus; enter through the large yellow gate and continue straight ahead.

Arrival and Welcome

You are greeted with a kukui nut lei and a welcome drink. Take a moment for the view: downtown Honolulu below, the Waianae range in the distance, rainforest at the edge of the property.

Hands-On Cultural Workshops

This is the part that sets Nutridge apart. Small groups rotate through hands-on activities and workshops — Hawaiian crafts, traditions and protocols explained by staff who grew up with them, not recited from a script.

Hawaiian Games

Traditional games played on the lawn, with plenty of room to wander the estate between rounds.

Dinner on the Estate

A farm-to-table spread of Hawaiian and local food — kalua pua’a, pulehu chicken, lau lau, baked fish, nalo greens, sweet bread — with liliko’i bars and haupia for dessert.

Tour's Location

Nutridge Estate, Nutridge Street, Honolulu, HI 96822

How is this different from the big luaus?

Group size and format. Nutridge keeps numbers small and builds the evening around hands-on activities and conversation rather than a large stage production. Guests consistently describe it as feeling personal rather than like a show.

Where is it?

Nutridge Estate, on Nutridge Street inside Pu’u Ualaka’a State Park on Tantalus, Honolulu 96822. Enter through the large yellow gate and continue straight ahead. It is roughly twenty minutes up the hill from Waikiki.

What time does it start and end?

The luau runs 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Self-drive guests check in at 3:45 PM. With transportation, pickup is between 3:00 and 3:30 PM.

Which days does it operate?

Monday through Friday. Mondays are frequently booked out by a private partner, and Saturdays and Sundays are held for private buyouts, so availability varies — check the calendar when booking.

Should I drive or book transportation?

If you have a rental car, driving is cheaper and parking is free. If you would rather not drive a narrow mountain road after dark, book the transportation ticket — pickup is between 3:00 and 3:30 PM.

What is included in the ticket?

A kukui nut lei, a welcome drink, four hours of activities and workshops, Hawaiian games, a traditional dinner, and complimentary water and soft drinks throughout. Parking is free for self-drive guests.

What is on the menu?

Nalo greens with pineapple and liliko’i dressing, steamed rice, kalua pua’a (imu-cooked shredded pork), pulehu chicken, pua’a lau lau, baked fish, purple sweet potato and King’s Hawaiian sweet bread. Dessert is liliko’i bars, haupia and fresh pineapple.

Can you handle dietary restrictions?

Usually, yes — vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and others. Note your requirements when booking; 48 hours’ notice is needed.

Are alcoholic drinks included?

No. Water and soft drinks are complimentary and a welcome drink is included; alcoholic beverages are available separately.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, all ages are welcome. Children 3–12 and youth 13–20 have their own rates, and infants 2 and under are free.

Is there a fire knife dancer?

Yes, the evening entertainment includes fire knife along with music and hula.

What should I wear?

Casual resort wear is fine. The estate is up in the hills at the edge of the rainforest, so evenings are cooler than Waikiki — bring a light layer. The ground is grass and gravel in places, so comfortable shoes are better than heels.

What happens if it rains?

The luau operates in most weather. If conditions make it unsafe, you will be contacted about rescheduling.

What are the views like?

The estate looks out over downtown Honolulu and across to the Waianae mountain range, with rainforest along the edge of the property. Sunset from up here is one of the main reasons people book it.
