North Kohala has the waterfalls most Big Island visitors never reach, because they sit on private land behind a gate.
The drive north is worth the seat time on its own; plantation towns like Hawi and Kapaau, the King Kamehameha statue, and green ranch country that looks nothing like the lava fields on the Kona side. Then the tour goes off-road into a private nature reserve.
There are two ways to do it. The walk on its own, which is gentle and ends in a swim, or the same walk paired with the full zipline course for a much bigger day.
Kohala Waterfalls AdventureFrom $255 / 6 to 7 hours / max 10 guestsWhat you get
Kohala Zip and DipFrom $345 / about 9 hours / max 10 guestsWhat you get
A swimsuit and a towel. The pools are the point, and the water is mountain-fed and cold.
Closed-toe shoes that can get wet. The trail is short but the footing is uneven.
Nothing else. Rain gear, hiking sticks, lunch and transportation are provided.
The waterfall walk is the gentlest tour Hawaii Forest and Trail runs in Kohala and works for mixed-age groups. Zip and Dip adds a zipline course with its own weight and age limits, which we will confirm with you before booking. Online booking is still being set up; send an inquiry and we will hold your places.

Pickup, then the run up through Hawi and Kapaau into North Kohala ranch country.
The tour leaves the pavement for land that is not open to the public.
About one mile along a private stream past a series of freshwater falls and pools. Gentle walking, minimal elevation gain.
The part most guests remember. Mountain-fed and cold.
On Zip and Dip only; the full canopy course with eight ziplines, six sky bridges and a rappel.
Lunch at a secluded overlook above the valleys and sea cliffs, then back to your pickup point.
The waterfall walk is a six to seven hour half day. Zip and Dip is the same walk plus the full zipline course, which makes it about nine hours.
Yes. The pools under the falls are the reason the tour exists. Bring a swimsuit and a towel.
Easy. Roughly one mile with minimal elevation gain, which makes this the gentlest Kohala tour and a reasonable choice for mixed-age groups.
Not for the waterfall walk. Zip and Dip carries the zipline limits, which we will confirm with you before booking.
Transportation, private reserve access, picnic lunch, rain gear and hiking sticks.
Capped at 10 guests on both.
